Stranger Things and Books

I want a story where the Stranger Things characters talk about books. And NOT Lord of the Rings, because everyone references that and I haven’t read it. (And I’m trying to avoid spoilers, so I do this awkward half-skim thing whenever it comes up).

No I want them to talk about other books. I want Nancy who relates just a little too hard to Lady Macbeth. (Or Hester Prynne, her own scarlet letter splashed across the movie theater marquee). I want an Eddie who’s obsessed with the Picture of Dorian Gray (after all, selling your soul to the devil is also a theme in rock and roll). I want Steve to find a kindred spirit in Gatsby, endlessly longing for a life he’s not sure is real and a woman who represents a past, or a dream, or a girl (he’s not sure which, and that’s part of the problem). 

I want Robin to read Virginia Woolf and go “wait, this is Gay.” I want Robin, who loves Frankenstein, to show it to El and I want El to absolutely adore it. Personally, I hate Frankenstein, but I think El would feel seen by a story about a scientist who experiments, trying to make a person, and makes a creature who is shunned and misunderstood by society and then labelled a monster.

another thing that I think would fix 50% of queer infighting overnight: if people understood what "invisibility" actually Means.

people see "this oppressed group has a problem with invisibility" and assume it just means "nobody knows what this oppressed group is," and Then assume "so nobody targets this oppressed group for Being an oppressed group."

when what "invisibility" Actually means is that when this oppressed group faces violence, that violence is swept under the rug (either by being misreported, or not reported at all).

the point of fighting back against invisibility is about allowing people to speak up about the oppression they Already Face and actually be Heard. which can then be used to help people get the support that they need.

so when someone says "this group doesn't experience violence Because all they face is invisibility" they are Actively participating in that invisibility, which then perpetuates that violence by allowing it to continue unseen.

which, of course, gets even Worse when people use this misunderstanding as an excuse to be actively violent towards other community members. to Actively try to suppress other people's voices because of this perception that they must Have It Better because the violence they face is, well, Invisible.

Characters like Tim get so used to lying and leaving out information that they eventually just give up on keeping track of the lies.

Like yeah he essentially embezzled a Batmobile but what’s Bruce gonna do now? It’s been years. Statute of limitations and all that.

Sure he maybe hired an acter to pretend to be his estranged uncle and fabricated government papers. In his defense he really didn’t what to be adopted.
